Mystic Aquarium officials are asking that they be allowed to resume research on four beluga whales, which were halted following the death of the fifth whale imported this spring from Canada.

The request is part of a three-page report released Monday by the National Marine Fisheries Service detailing the August 6 death of a male whale known as Havok.

The report was released at the same time as the aquarium released a public statement that a female whale named Jetta, which was reportedly critically ill last week, is improving and being closely watched.

“Although it is too early to be optimistic, there have been gradual improvements in the whale’s white blood cell count, overall gastric health, appetite and weight stabilization,” said Stephen Coan. , president and CEO of the aquarium. “We’re by no means out of the woods and we have a long way to go before we can say there has been a meaningful recovery.”

Coan said the aquarium brought in experts from across the country to help with Jetta’s treatment.

It is not yet known whether Jetta’s condition is linked to those who caused the death of Havok, who Coan said had gastric ulcers and other pre-existing problems, including a heart deformity. The cause of death has not been determined.

“As this was an isolated health event and in no way related to ongoing research, we respectfully request permission to resume research sampling from the other animals listed on the permit to achieve our important research objectives. “Mystic said in his report to NMFS, which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Jetta and Havok were a group of five whales imported in May from Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ont., To Mystic, which specializes in beluga research. The aquarium plans to study them and use blood, saliva and other biological samples to help them better understand the health of whales in the wild.

The aquarium said in its report that Havok’s death was not caused by this research.

“This case was an unpredictable health issue in an animal that had been cleared by qualified veterinarians in Canada for transport,” the aquarium said in its report, which was submitted to NOAA on Aug. 17, before Jetta is declared ill. “We have been vigilant and will continue to ensure that one whale’s medical condition does not pose a risk to others. This matter has no impact on the health of our other animals.

NOAA spokeswoman Kate Brogan said the agency was working closely with the Federal Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to review Mystic’s report.

Connecticut-based Friends of Animals and other activists tried unsuccessfully to block the transport of the whales in a lawsuit last fall.

Steven Hernick, an attorney for Friends of Animals, said on Tuesday they were considering further legal action if they determined it could help Mystic’s beluga whales or “prevent future transports like this.”

Naomi Rose, a scientist from the Animal Welfare Institute, who was not part of the trial, said she would oppose resuming research at Mystic until NOAA and the Inspection Service of the animal and plant health conduct a thorough assessment of the health of the remaining whales.

Good Tuesday!

We’re less than three weeks away from the end of the season – a part of the year that I like to call “the pre-qualifiers,” as almost every game from here has implications for qualifying or the game. playoff standings. To celebrate, we’re doing a recap of the power rankings, and then tackling a few storylines as the games pick up speed again this week.

Let’s go.

1. Connecticut Sun | 20-6 | eight-game winning streak

If Brionna Jones’ breakout season in the bubble has been a revelation for the Sun, her recall in 2021 could be the piece that pushes the Sun past the finish line and gives them enough firepower to win the franchise’s first championship. Her play, alongside DeWanna Bonner and Jonquel Jones, gives The Sun a true Big Three (and makes me very excited for what this trio – assuming Connecticut keeps Jonquel Jones in free agency – can do alongside a Alyssa Thomas healthy in 2022). This season, that trio had a +131 as they were on the floor together in 895 possessions, by pivot analysis.

2. Ace of Las Vegas | 19-7 | two-game winning streak

The Sun had a better individual defensive game plan for A’ja Wilson than I’ve seen from most teams, now the reigning MVP with four points on 1 in 15. Brionna Jones has performed extremely well against Wilson and the Sun also occasionally passed Bonner to the four to make Wilson look different defensive. While this may give some teams a roadmap to defend Wilson, I also believe in the backlash from Wilson and Bill Laimbeer. When these two teams face off again in the playoffs (I’m putting that in the universe now), I expect fireworks.

3.

The Washington Mystics (9-15) face the Dallas Wings (11-14) for the third and final time this regular season. The Mystics just suffered an 82-77 loss Thursday night to the Wings. Elena Delle Donne, who recently returned to the pitch after not playing since 2019, was only down for 12 minutes before being pulled out for precautionary reasons. Myisha Hines-Allen (16 points), Theresa Plaisance (13 points) and Ariel Atkins (12 points) were the only Mystics players to score in double digits and not have Delle Donne the entire game and Tina Charles at all. definitely had an impact on the performance of the team. Washington shot a little better than Dallas, but they rebounded 35-25 Thursday night.

It is not known if Delle Donne will be available for tomorrow’s game, but it is certain that Tina Charles will not play due to strain in her left buttocks. Charles, who was injured in Sunday’s game against Seattle, will miss the next 3-5 games announced by the team on Thursday.

Washington struggled to keep Arike Ogunbowale, who posted a record 26 points. Isabelle Harrison also had a great performance in the last game, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. The Mystics need to put more pressure on Arike and stay ready for his quick moves if they are to claim their first win over Dallas this season. With or without Delle Donne, Washington will have to crush the boards to get more touches with the ball.

Mystic – Henry Ashton Ramsay Peyton, 97, died in New London on August 15, 2021. Henry was an engineer, naval officer and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was born January 1, 1924 in New London, son of Thomas Green Peyton and Mary Morsell Craighill.

The son of a naval officer, Henry grew up in more than ten locations in the United States and abroad. He attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, where he graduated at the top of his class in 1941, and entered the United States Naval Academy in an accelerated program, graduating on D-Day. (June 6, 1944). Henry received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from MIT in 1948 and an MBA from the University of Hartford in 1970.

He met his future wife, Evelyn Cope Stryker, while on vacation in Virginia. After Henry proposed a Broadway performance of “Kiss Me Kate,” the couple married at Williamsburg Baptist Church on May 19, 1951. In May 2021, to their delight, Henry and Evelyn celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary surrounded by close family.

While in the Navy, Henry served in Brooklyn, California, Washington State, Connecticut, and Washington, DC. Upon retirement in 1965, the Peytons returned to the New London area, where Henry worked as a project manager at General Dynamics Electric Boat. The family moved to Houston, Texas in 1977, and returned to East Lyme in 1987. Henry and Evelyn moved to Mystic in 2002.

Henry was an inventive and accomplished engineer. He was deeply devoted to his family, friends and colleagues. Henry had a dry, provocative sense of humor and an amazing memory; he could remember stories, experiences, poems and words from decades earlier. He was also a skillful ad-libber, cleverly substituting his own irreverent, but still fun, word choices for classics like “The Night Before Christmas.”

Henry is survived by his beloved wife Evelyn; his children: Thomas Bigda-Peyton and his wife Francis, William Peyton and Ellen Glaessner and her husband Phil; and his grandchildren: Joe and his wife Lindsay, Hope and Sam Bigda-Peyton, Daniel and Steven Peyton and Phil Glaessner Jr.

Funeral arrangements are private. Donations in memory of Henry can be made to the St. James Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, New London, or the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center, 27 Chase Street, Pawcatuck, CT 06379.

The Washington Mystics should get a big boost on Sunday as star forward Elena Delle Donne is likely to make her season debut in their game against the Seattle Storm.

Mystics Coach Mike Thibault talked to journalists Saturday and reported that Delle Donne played five on five during practice and played without any hesitation. Delle Donne will be subject to a minute restriction, although it is not known exactly how much she will be able to play.

Delle Donne, who in 2019 won her second MVP and led the Mystics to their first title in franchise history, hasn’t played since the WNBA Finals that year. She had back surgery to heal a herniated disc after the 2019 season, but was expected to be ready to leave for 2020. However, when the pandemic struck, Delle Donne opted out of the bubble due to health concerns. Then, as she prepared for this season, she worsened her back injury and had to have a second surgery in January of this year.

While it was clear she wouldn’t be ready for the start of training camp, Delle Donne’s initial goal was to play the team’s first game of the season in May. That, of course, didn’t happen and the timeline shifted to a return from a post-Olympic break. Delle Donne started training a few weeks ago and is now allowed to try his hand at a live match.

“It has been mentally amazing to be back with my teammates and to compete again”, Delle Donnne said earlier this month. “It was a very difficult process, but I was able to stay the course and honestly hold on to every day.”

Before the injuries, Delle Donne was one of the best players in the league and a perennial MVP candidate. But after two back surgeries and almost two years without playing a game, it remains to be seen when – and if – she can return to that level. The mystics hope it will be as soon as possible.

Without Delle Donne and struggling with all manner of other health issues, the mystics naturally struggled. Heading into Sunday’s game against the Storm, they sit in 10th place at 8-13, excluding them from the playoffs. However, they are only half a game behind the Dallas Wings, eighth, and two games behind the Chicago Sky, sixth. If Delle Donne is even something close to herself, the Mystics still have time to leave at the end of the season.

Northern Mystics Shootout Grace Nweke made 58 of her 62 shots in their ANZ Premiership Grand Final victory over Mainland Tactix – and got the rebound three of the four times she missed.

These are the kinds of numbers you would expect from her, even though she is only 19 years old. It was the 12th time this season that she has finished a game with 50 or more goals under her belt and the ninth time she has made 60 attempts – at least one per minute.

But what stands out most for her coach, Hélène Wilson, is how much she wants the ball.

Grace Nweke was a reliable shot for the Northern Mystics in 2021.

Andrew Cornaga / Photosport

Grace Nweke was a reliable shot for the Northern Mystics in 2021.

“Someone has potential as a shooter when they want the ball and want to be the center of attention at this critical moment,” she said after the 61-59 victory at Spark Arena in Auckland on Sunday .

“Grace is on the ground telling Peta [Toeava] to give him a decent ball and Tayla [Earle] thus, both.

“I just think it’s something really special. I can’t coach this. You can’t teach people that, that’s her.

Nweke made her debut for the Mystics in the third round of the 2019 season, against their crosstown rivals the Stars, while in her senior year of high school at Avondale College.

She came into play early in the third quarter in a match where her side were already trailing 11 and had an instant impact by closing the gap to six at the final whistle.

Nweke got her first start just three games later, and since then her height – she is 1.93m – and strength have made her one of New Zealand netball’s biggest offensive threats.

Tactix defender Jane Watson described her as a “weapon” after Sunday’s final, while her captain, defender Sulu Fitzpatrick, noted how much she enjoyed training against her, then praised her ability to handling the pressure of being a volume shooter, one of his teammates are looking for every opportunity.

“At 19, being able to take that kind of pressure for a whole season shows that she’s very mature.

“I’m proud of her and know this is just the start.

Nweke will likely be included when the Silver Ferns’ first team of the year is named on Tuesday. She played for the national team in a series of internal matches last year, but has yet to make her debut.

Wilson said it would be “fantastic” if Nweke was selected by Ferns coach Noeline Taurua this week, but is confident that she will one day make it as she has already shown a great willingness to learn.

“In the two and a half to three years that we’ve had her, to become someone who didn’t feel like a part of that high performance environment that she was in today, I just think that’s a testament to her ability to learn, but also her maturity to have performance conversations with girls.

“She wants to know why, and she’s really curious about how she can be better, and she’s had the training and the staff behind her to increase her physical skills.

“There is still more to come – she is so young, and I love to watch her grow up.”

MYSTIC (AP) – One of the five belugas acquired from aquarium in Canada after legal battle with animal rights activists died in his new home in Connecticut.

Officials at Mystic Aquarium, which specializes in beluga research, said in a Facebook post that the male whale arrived in May with a pre-existing health problem. He died on Friday, despite “24-hour medical treatment, testing and 24-hour monitoring,” the aquarium said in a statement.

“Although he showed signs of improvement from gastrointestinal illness, we are deeply saddened to share that he passed away (Friday) morning,” the aquarium said. “This is a devastating loss for our staff and for the community, especially the animal care team who work closely with the beluga whales. “

The whale arrived with four others in May from Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario, after a long battle to obtain permits from the United States and Canada.

Connecticut-based Friends of Animals and other activists tried to block the transport in a lawsuit last fall against the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and the National Marine Fisheries Service, which approved the license to research.

The group claimed the US permit violated the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the National Environmental Policy Act because government officials failed to adequately address the potential damage to belugas caused by their transfer to Mystic.

In March, a federal judge refused to issue an injunction.

The whales, aged 7 to 12, were born in captivity and left crowded habitat with around 50 other whales to be the focus of important research designed to benefit beluga whales in the wild, aquarium officials said. .

The Mainland Tactix were in awe of the opportunity at last year’s ANZ Premiership Grand Final and won’t let that happen again.

For the second season in a row, the Tactix will play in the national netball title match when they face the Mystics at Spark Arena in Auckland on Sunday.

Playing in their first grand final in team history against the Pulse last year, the Tactix were way below their best and started badly.

There were obvious nerves and it wasn’t until the second half that they settled into their rhythm but found themselves chasing after the game, dropping 10 goals at halftime.

With Temalisi Fakahokotau being the only member of last year’s grand final not to return, the Tactix had a better appreciation of what to expect on Sunday.

The intensity and pressure would only increase and Tactix captain Jane Watson thought the pain of last year’s big final loss had been a solid learning experience.

Whatever happens, a first-time champion will be crowned by the Mystics who have never won the ANZ Premiership title or played in the all-New Zealand competition decider.

With New Zealand on Alert Level 2 last August, the Pulse and Tactix performed in front of a small crowd of just 160 fans at Invercargill. More than 5,000 are expected at Spark Arena with the vast majority of Mystics supporters.

The Tactix had been talking this week about embracing the netball grand finale and making the most of it because they didn’t roll that often. Some elite netballers have gone their entire careers without playing one.

Jane Watson thinks the Tactix are better for the lessons of last year’s big final loss.

“We certainly have [mentioned last year]. We touched on a few points and hope that our preparation before this game, we know it’s going to be a lot better. We’re a little more experienced with this now. Hope this helps us move forward, ”Watson said.

“It wasn’t quite the feeling that we had had all year [in that grand final]. I think the last games we had this year were like a final for us. I think we will be better prepared and ready to start strong and put in a good performance that feels natural to us. “

Qualifying for the back-to-back Grand Finals is a world away from the debut of Watson, the excellent Silver Ferns, with the Tactix.

She won just five games in three seasons with the team between 2012-14 in the former Trans-Tasman League, regularly receiving unbalanced beatings.

In a bizarre move, the Tactix failed to hold Watson back and she moved to the Steel in 2015, thriving in three seasons with the Southerners. The outstanding defender was a member of Steel’s title-winning team in the ANZ Premiership’s debut season in 2017.

In a signing move for the Tactix, Watson joined the Reds and Blacks in 2018 and has been a central figure in their turnaround, helping to set the standards and inspiring them to victory with his brilliant play.

Jane Watson and the Tactix have had a lot to smile about this season after a tough start to the campaign.

“It has been a massive change. I think it’s really cool and that’s all to the credit of everyone who was a part of it, even then and those who are still around now. I’m just very proud of the girls. I know we worked really hard and we deserve this place, I really believe it.

“I really wanted to see a change in the mindset, the performance culture around Tactix. I think this has been a positive change, thanks to a lot of hard work by a lot of people. “

A chartered flight from Tactix fans will travel to Auckland to support the team and Watson said they were blown away by the support they received.

Even in their dark days in the Trans-Tasman League, the Tactix drew nice crowds to their home games and they stayed with the team.

A first Tactix title would be a reward for them and everyone who has followed the team across the mainland, which stretches from Waimate to Nelson-Marlborough and includes the West Coast.

“It would honestly mean the world. There is more than just [us], there’s our fans, there’s a community, there’s our whole region and the people who really put their time behind us – our sponsors, everyone really. There are too many to name them, to be honest.

“Just being able to make them proud and play for more than us, for everyone.”

The battle between Mystics Grace Nweke's shot on goal and Tactix goalkeeper Jane Watson could decide the grand finale.

The battle between Mystics Grace Nweke’s shot on goal and Tactix goalkeeper Jane Watson could decide the grand finale.

The Mystics and Tactix have served classics this season with the first two games decided by a single goal and each team securing a victory. In the final round, the Mystics won 63-59 in Christchurch to gain some confidence heading into the grand final and win the round series 2-1.

If the Tactix are to win, they will need to limit the balloon supply from Mystics’ wing attack and main source Peta Toeava in prolific goalscorer Grace Nweke.

Nweke’s positional battle with Watson and compatriot Silver Fern Karin Burger would be key in determining the outcome of the final.

“There is no doubt that they are scoring quickly. So I think it’s all about our team effort on defense putting the pressure all the way through, but also knowing when we have the ball, we have control.

“We have to make the most of every opportunity we have. “
