Can Anna Duggar divorce Josh based on her religious beliefs?
Is divorce an option for Josh and Anna Duggar? Josh was arrested in the spring of 2020 for receiving and detaining child pornography. His trial took place from November 30 to December 9. Throughout this time, his wife has remained by his side, despite the disgusting accusations. She attended every day of her trial.
Ultimately, he was found guilty and is now in the county jail awaiting sentencing, which will come in the spring. He risks decades behind bars, plus fines. Sources say Anna is still by Josh’s side following his guilty verdict.
For months, fans urged Anna for a divorce. Fans want her to protect her children, and they fear Josh will harm them. The couple share seven children, from two months to 12 years old. Now that he’s behind bars, that’s no longer a problem.
But fans are still wondering how Anna can stay married to Josh after learning about the disturbing material found on her computer. Some of the gruesome content would have even included the abuse of infants. A lot of people thought that as a mother, learning more about this content would be enough for her to leave it.
Many fans and critics believe she stays with him because of her family’s religious beliefs. Many Christian denominations do not like divorce, but they generally make exceptions. The Duggars are part of a very strict religion, the Institute of Basic Life Principles (IBLP). Divorce is frowned upon in their religion, but is it allowed in a situation as extreme as this?
Can Anna Duggar divorce Josh?
On the IBLP website, there is a book for sale, which questions whether divorce is ever acceptable and is about rebuilding a marriage. The description of the book refers to an “exception clause” from Matthew 5:32.
Matthew 5:32 reads:
“But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except because of sexual immorality, commits her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.”
In Christianity, in general, this type of immorality refers to pornography and adultery, according to You have questions. Immorality generally includes all relationships that are not between a husband and wife. It seems likely that the same acts fall under the immorality of the IBLP, although it cannot be found on the official website of the organization.
So, it looks like Josh’s crimes would be part of immorality. However, that doesn’t mean that Anna will or will not divorce Josh. We have no way of knowing that unless something actually happens. Fans are hopeful that she will eventually leave Josh and start a new, healthy life for herself and her children.
