” Bagwal ” stoning festival organized in a discreet way
Pithoragarh, August 22 (PTI) The ‘Bagwal’ festival, in which worshipers traditionally throw stones at each other, was held on Sunday in a low-key case at Devidhura temple in the Champawat district of Uttarakhand due to COVID – 19 restrictions.
The festival sees devotees divided into four clans, throwing stones at each other to please the deity. It only lasted seven minutes, said Khim Singh Lamharia, chair of the Devidhura temple committee.
But even in that short time, 77 of the total 300 worshipers were injured, he said.
The festival is held annually as a ritual to please the goddess.
As a precautionary measure due to COVID-19, no one from the administration attended the festival and no outside guests were invited, Lamharia said.
“The bagwal was played with local flowers and fruits. A total of 1,250 local people witnessed it,” he added. PTI COR ALM IJT
