Bastet – and two kittens – bring comfort to the family

Last night we were given two black kittens, which we named Lucifer and Icarus. The cat my son originally connected and befriended was the neighbor’s cat, so I decided to contact a Northwest Arkansas animal placement group. While my kids slept with these new family members, I had a brief connection with Bastet – a relationship I had never had before. Bastet is the Kemet goddess of protection and health. It is an animal deity represented as tall and slender, with the head of a cat.

I don’t generally resonate with Kemet, as my path hasn’t completely led in that direction yet – probably considering my Norse and Scottish Celtic ancestors. But something changed last night when I saw my sleepy 6 year old huddled in our chakra altar space, now set up for the heart chakra. He was healthy, meditative in his dream space, with the two kittens snuggled up to him. Before getting up to take a picture, I was lying with him because he was restless and had had an emotionally restless night. Noah was riddled with anxiety and self-doubt, something I imagine was horrible for such a small child at 3 a.m. In that little moment, Bastet came to my mind as I watched Lucifer and Icarus with Noah. A feeling of relief came to my chest, I knew my son was okay and felt it was okay for me to get some sleep if I made him rest in the heart chakra green space. Of course with these kittens.

I was tired, moved by the lack of sleep myself, and guided my son through late night lunar prayers, grateful affirmations, to help calm his mind. This process took a while, but Bastet reached out with her warm hands and let me know that she was a mother herself, to Mihos. She let me know not to worry about my little one, she was with him.

That being said, cats are very protective of their young. When motherhood and a protective deity are combined, this energy is an unstoppable force field. I learned today that Bastet claimed Noah as his own, and it was nothing more than the Goddess protecting her child. I now know that I can turn to Bastet with my insecurities as a mother. She understands the difficulties of being a mother and takes them to heart with open arms. For his love, protection and healing, I am always grateful. She allowed me to sleep and take care of myself so that I could also take care of my children.
